In short

  • About 91,100 people lived in Leander on July 1, 2025, says the U.S. Census Bureau.1
  • That is up about 54% since the 2020 census, from about 59,200 (our math).12
  • In the last year the city added about 3,450 people, close to 4% (our math).12

Numbers marked “our math” are our estimates, not official figures. The notes show the inputs and the steps.

How it works

  • The Census Bureau counts everyone every 10 years. In between, it makes yearly estimates for each city as of July 1.1
  • City estimates follow city limits. When a city annexes land, people living there are added.1
  • Each release can revise past years, so older numbers may change.1

  • Leander year by year (July 1): 60,868 in 2020; 67,099 in 2021; 74,584 in 2022; 80,540 in 2023; 87,680 in 2024; 91,132 in 2025.1
  • About 1 in 8 Williamson County residents now lives in Leander (our math). A small part of Leander is in Travis County.12

The other side

  • The city’s own number is higher. The city’s 2025 audit report uses 92,872, about 1,740 more than the Census estimate (our math).2 The audit does not say how the city got its number.
  • Cedar Park’s slow growth is not a sign of trouble by itself. It has little open land left, so it cannot grow as fast.
  • Estimates can be wrong. The true number will not be known until the 2030 census.

Questions to ask

  • Which population number does the city use for its budget and plans, and why?
  • How much of recent growth came from annexed land, by the city’s count?

Changes to this page

  • Nov. 2, 2026: We removed an unsourced reason for why the city’s population number is higher.
  • Nov. 2, 2026: Rewrote the questions to ask so each is open, neutral and addressed to the public body.

What we still don’t know

  • How many people live just outside city limits and use city roads and parks.
  • The 2026 estimate.
