In short
Numbers marked “our math” are our estimates, not official figures. The notes show the inputs and the steps.
How it works
- The Census Bureau asks a sample of homes about income each year. It pools five years to get numbers for cities.1
- Each number has a margin of error. The true number is likely within that range, give or take.1
- We show two measures. “Median household” is the middle household. “Per person” is all income divided by all residents, including children.1
What the numbers show
| Place | Median household income | Give or take | Income per person | Give or take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leander | $139,048 | $5,055 | $60,586 | $2,779 |
| Cedar Park | $129,545 | $10,860 | $57,496 | $2,500 |
| Round Rock | $99,287 | $4,128 | $50,365 | $2,138 |
| Georgetown | $95,062 | $4,700 | $50,829 | $1,936 |
| Williamson County | $111,340 | $1,581 | $53,505 | $723 |

- Leander’s typical household earns about $28,000 more than the county’s (our math).12
- Leander’s range does not overlap Round Rock’s or Georgetown’s. So Leander is very likely higher than both.12
- Per person, the gap is smaller. Per-person income counts children too. Places with more children per home get a lower per-person number.1
The other side
- These are five-year averages. They do not show the most recent year alone.1
- The city’s own financial report uses a different number. It lists a county figure from a different federal agency. See leander jobs and income.
- A high middle income does not mean everyone is well off. About 6 of every 100 Leander residents lived in poverty.3
Questions to ask
- Which income data does the city use in its own reports?
- Where does the city post the income figures it relies on?

What you can do or watch next
- See leander jobs and income for the city’s ten-year numbers.
- Watch for the next Census five-year release, usually in December.

Our math. $139,048 − $111,340 = $27,708. Leander low end $139,048 − $5,055 = $133,993; Round Rock high end $99,287 + $4,128 = $103,415; Georgetown high end $95,062 + $4,700 = $99,762. Cedar Park high end $129,545 + $10,860 = $140,405, above Leander’s low end, so the ranges overlap. ↩ ↩2
