In short
- Exemptions for owners 65 or older, owners with disabilities and disabled veterans took about $5.2 billion off school-tax value in 2026. In 2021 it was about $1.4 billion (our math).12
- The age 65+ exemptions grew the most, from about $0.44 billion to about $2.98 billion (our math).12
- These are still small next to the whole county. They were about 2.8% of market value in 2026 (our math).12
Numbers marked “our math” are our estimates, not official figures. The notes show the inputs and the steps.
How it works
- Every homeowner can get the school homestead exemption. Owners who are 65 or older, or who have a disability, can get an extra amount off for school taxes. State law now sets that extra amount at $60,000.3
- Disabled veterans get their own exemptions. The amount depends on the disability rating. A veteran rated 100% disabled pays no tax on the home.3
- The appraisal district counts the value taken off. This page adds up its school-district rows for the whole county.1
What the numbers show

| Disabled veterans | $0.98B | $2.09B |
| Disability | $0.03B | $0.17B |
| Total | $1.44B | $5.24B |
| Share of market value | 1.3% | 2.8% |

- Veteran exemptions about doubled. Age 65+ exemptions grew almost 7 times (our math).2
The other side
- This is value, not tax dollars. The page does not show how much tax these owners saved or who pays more because of it.
- Both the law and the number of homes changed in these years. This table does not show how much each one mattered.3
- These exemptions are written into state law. Local boards do not choose the state amounts. Some local boards add their own, which shows up as a separate local column in the spreadsheet.1
- For the full list of what comes off, see from market value to taxable value.
Questions to ask
- How many owners get each exemption, by the appraisal district’s count?
- Where does the appraisal district post exemption totals for each taxing unit?
Changes to this page
- Nov. 2, 2026: Added questions to ask.
- Nov. 2, 2026: We checked every figure against its source. We reworded the other-side points so they stick to what the sources show.
What you can do or watch next
- If you are 65 or older, have a disability or are a disabled veteran, see property tax exemptions for how to apply.
- See exemptions you may be missing for exemptions people often miss.
What we still don’t know
- How many owners get each exemption. The spreadsheet shows value, not the number of owners.
- City and county tax amounts. This page covers school taxes only.

Our math, adding the school-district rows ($ millions). 2021: age 65+ 375.6 + 62.5 = 438.1; veterans 975.9; disability 26.9 + 3.9 = 30.8; total 1,444.8; market 107,219.6; share 1.35%. 2026: age 65+ 2,898.0 + 78.6 = 2,976.6; veterans 2,091.4; disability 163.4 + 3.8 = 167.2; total 5,235.2; market 187,383.4; share 2.79%. Growth: 2,976.6 ÷ 438.1 = 6.8; 2,091.4 ÷ 975.9 = 2.1. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4 ↩5
